Decorating Trend: The Pouf

by HFM Team on August 24, 2010

With a superfluous name like “the pouf”, this trend is one that keeps the “fun” in function.  Part coffee table, part footstool, part ottoman for extra seating, this little concoction adds a lot of punch to any room.

We used to look at smaller footstools as space fillers and small seating.  Now, the pouf has taken on new meaning with the addition of trims, buttons, outrageous fabrics, and unexpected shapes.  Every upholstery company has one, and can barely keep up with the demand.

Some are no more than simple cylinders, covered in leather with a baseball stitch.  One of the more practical pieces is a round pouf of 36” to 48” that separates into 4 smaller pieces.  These “mini” seats can be angled like pie pieces and used as smaller tables in addition to seating.

There are certain styles draped and lavished upon, with layers of fabric making it more of statement piece.  Trims and fringes outline every seam, and more than one patterned fabric may be used.  Done tastefully, this style of pouf becomes a welcome focal point in the room.

Tuck your favorite pouf under a sofa table or console to not only soften the look, but also provide easy access for guest seating.

This mini decorating trend is proving itself to be very functional in bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms and more.  It is a smart way to provide extra seating without lining up too many chairs in one room.  You’ll find endless pouf selections throughout all of our North Carolina Furniture showrooms and our North Carolina Furniture outlets, located inside Hickory Furniture Mart.
