From cheetah to leopard to crocodile, animal prints have a chameleon-like applicability, perfect for any area of your home. Over the past few years, this trend has enjoyed increasing popularity, and it’s readily available in a variety of forms. If you’re looking for a way to add a dash of drama or a taste of the exotic, take advantage of animal prints, and bring your home interior to life! But … to avoid turning your home into a virtual safari, just follow a few simple guidelines outlined below.
Less is More
With a number of prints in the animal kingdom, it can be hard to decide which to use. But that doesn’t mean you should use them all. In fact, the main decorating disaster associated with animal prints is overuse. Like combining too many plaids or florals, too many animal prints can be extremely distracting, causing a space to lack any cohesion or sense of calm. To avoid visual disarray, stick to one or two types of animal print per space. If it’s a small space, like a bathroom, one print is plenty, whereas a larger area, like a living room, could potentially handle two prints. Use in small portions, too. For example, instead of wallpapering an entire area in leopard print, add a punch of visual appeal by utilizing animal print on a single upholstered chair or an overstuffed ottoman.
How & Where
From bedroom to kitchen, there’s are a number of ways to use animal prints. For bedroom decor, consider a leopard print duvet cover, or, if that’s a little too much, a pair of zebra or cheetah pillow shams would add excitement on a smaller-scale. In both cases, the animal print should be the main attraction, ideally, set against solid-colored linens.
More formal areas, like a living or dining room, are also optimal places to make use of this vibrant trend. Understated, but still eye-catching, alligator-embossed leather or leather alternatives would be perfect. For instance, a set of dining room chairs would look fantastic with embossed seat covers, and a living room sofa would be unique yet sophisticated. Since a living room is a larger space, it’s okay to bring in additional touches of animal print.
In smaller interior spaces, like bathrooms, proportions and coordination are two important element to keep in mind. While animal print towels, bath mats and shower curtains are always options, consider hanging a pair of safari-themed prints for a unique twist on this theme.
Accent Pieces
Accent pieces, wherever you choose to place them, are a wonderful way to implement small doses of animal prints. Rugs are one example that can be found in almost any animal print. Placed in an entry way or the laundry room, an exotically inspired rug is a fun focal point for floor decor.
